Reading "Swanns way" - as if remembering with Proust

When reading the "combray" part, I clearly understood the author's unique writing style and thus recorded some of my insights into the author's articles.

The author takes his thoughts as the central point and combines his feelings and vague associations when he is not awake with reality. There are many memories and feelings of his life in different places in the past in the vast space. Still, when the fragments of these memories come to an end, it is found that the author's body is still fixed, a small space constructed by a bed middle. The author's range of physical activity is not extensive, but the divergence of thought is extensive. The author's recollections contain many metaphors, which vividly describe his mood in the environment at that time. When the fragments of the recollection make the author feel unhappy, the metaphors used are primarily negative, distorted and oppressive. And when pieces of memory are nostalgic, the metaphors become open, bright, and lively again. However, without exception, these memories are still based on the author turning over on the bed and do not exceed the size of a room. It seems that only when the author thinks of this memory, this space is singled out and exists, without any prerequisites for other environments.

And the fulcrum needed for the author's thought to diverge is also constantly changing, taking the whole room as the structure, and gradually to the room's unique layout: slides, handles, and then to the living room, the garden and the grandmother's body. The transition is like what we experience in our daily daze and meditation. It is very natural and silent. It flows from one object to another unrelated thing without knowing it, making the author's work in real life. Actions are combined with his feelings and memories. If you don't read it carefully, you can't tell whether the author is still in memory or reality.

Through the author's delicate brushstrokes, in the first part of this book, I can feel the image of the author as a sensitive and lively boy who is slightly dependent on his mother vividly on the paper in his childhood. In addition, following the author's description and perspective, I also vaguely felt a sense of memory, a vague behavior in daily life, but the author expressed it more clearly in this form of writing. It made me think of my daily feelings in the process of reading, and sighed: Indeed, this is indeed the feeling that will appear when recalling the past.

In fact, in the process of reading, I also often felt that the author's attitude towards mother seemed too dependent, which made me feel very confused. I suspected that this was because I was not sure what age the author was in the memory. So it is difficult to judge whether this is an over-reliance. But as I read it, I think this memory is in the transitional stage of childhood to juvenile. The author's character is empathetic and delicate, so I think his dependence on his mother is normal. Still, in this section, I'd like to hear how people judge the author's age.

  1. Hey Li, these are some really interesting points you have made. I did not consider the lack of physical movement in the story. The long reflective sentences definitely had me in almost a trance, which may explain why I felt so relaxed/calm as I read the story since there were no starts or pauses in action, just simply thoughts. Additionally, your observation about the types of metaphors based on the emotion associated with it is very intriguing, I suppose it reflects the complexity of memories and that the emotions we tie to these experiences are rarely forgotten, for example Proust vividly remembers the angst and frustration he felt when his mother denied him a goodnight kiss. I am also unsure about this dependence on his mother and whether this was healthy or normal for this social period. Your question regarding his age is interesting because the reflective nature of this piece makes it difficult to know if some of the observations were things he noticed at the time or were formed later on during his reflection. For example, the discussions about death may suggest he was old enough to understand death, but perhaps these observations were pieced together with retrospect. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I hope we can continue to discuss these in class this week! (Anna Mote)
